Smeaton Flour Mill
A must to visit, while staying at Deep Spring Estate Daylesford is the Smeaton Flour Mill, build in () by the Anderson brother’s, while taking a short 15 min drive through wide open farm surrounds you will notice remnants of the gold prospecting era, mullock heaps, remnants of battery ramps. From Deep Spring Estate Daylesford take a left towards Blampied – Ballarat. (or a 20 min drive from Daylesford on the Midland Highway towards Ballarat) Turning right at the Swiss Mountain Pub (great country meals to be had there), making sure to take the left handed rd towards Smeaton (Daylesford-Clunes Rd). Passing Hepburn Lagoon on your left (great fishing there). At the t-section turn right onto the Weronia-Kingston Rd, taking the first turn off to the left again along Green Hill. At Smeaton township’s main crossing, (lovely Country pub there) turn left onto the Creswick-Smeaton Rd. You will cross over the beautiful Birch Creek blue stone bridge. At which point you turn left along the creek towards the Flourmill. Its huge blue stone 5 storey high mill and red brick chimney standing out in its lush surrounds. The mill and its grounds have been purchased by the Government in (), making the grounds accessible to the public. Enjoy a bit of flour producing history, Check out especially the creek frontage. The restored water race, waterwheel and the seperate blue stone office building. Wander along the creek towards the Birch Creek blue stone bridge. For a bit of historic research, take a right from Deep Spring Estate Daylesford , onto the Midland Hwy. After about 2 min drive (it’s about 5 min drive from Daylesford towards Ballarat on the Midland Highway on your right), you will see Eganstown Cemetery on the left just above Deep Creek mineral spring. Local r(h)umour say’s it gives “body” to the bottled mineral water. Great little place to do some soul searching. If you’re up for more, a bit further from Deep Spring Estate Daylesford on the Midland Highway turn right into Cemetery Rd (turn left if coming from Daylesford towards Ballarat). You will find Blanket flat Cemetery on your right, it’s the older of the 2 local cemeteries, which shows by the age of the headstones. You might check out and wonder about the high proportion of children graves from the 19th Century. Also discover graves from the pioneers of Irish & Swiss-Italian background. Corinella Spring & waterfall in Eganstown Corinella spring & waterfall in Eganstown. Bushwalks around Eganstown State forest Just in the back of Deep spring Estate Daylesford (about 7 min drive from Daylesford towards Ballarat on the Midland Highway) there are beautiful walking tracks meandering through the forest, check out wonderful names like "Linger and die gully", "Tin pot gully", "Drummers gully" or "Don't wake em gully". Don't forget to bring your metal detector. Fishing at Hepburn lagoon near Eganstown Just past Deep Spring Estate Daylesford , about 8 min drive from Daylesford towards Ballarat on the Midland Highway, turn right at the Blampied pub, taking the left hand road towards Smeaton. You will find Hepburn lagoon down the sloops of Kangaroo hill, named after Captain Hepburn, great for fishing. Deep Creek mineral spring Just down the road from Deep Spring Estate Daylesford (or about 6 min drive from Daylesford towards Ballarat on the Midland Highway) is Deep creek mineral spring with its Victoria pump house still in use supplying the world with "Deep spring mineral water".
